Back in the day, only soldiers wore military uniforms in North Korea. But after a really hard time known as the Arduous March, people started seeing these uniforms everywhere in the Jangmadang markets.

Soldiers who left the army began trading their uniforms for food, and soon, everyday people began wearing them, valuing them for being long-lasting and high-quality. When regular people wear these uniforms, they take off the shoulder decorations and just wear the clothes part.

Some of these uniforms even make their way to China through illegal markets.
